It was in 2006 that I remember watching my first YouTube video. I was just 16 years old and was so satisfied with my personalized MySpace page I had spent hours toiling over. A notification popped up from a friend who had linked me to a video by the duo known as “Smosh” lip-synching to the Pokémon television theme song. The cheesy production and the over the top personalities of the boys who appeared to be my age instantly drew me into the website.
Since 2006, YouTube’s popularity has grown expansively in many ways that its users and creators could only have imagined almost a decade ago. Though it has become an extremely corporate entity complete with a mass of advertising and product placement, my love for the website has only increased thanks to the many individuals that populate its pages, the “celebrities” of YouTube.
These young (and some older) people from around the world have began to post their daily activities plus other entertaining content to create what I consider to be the most personal entertainment experience in our recent history. Thanks to social media as well as the formula YouTube has created in which user created content can be freely be uploaded by most individuals, the human experience has never been so easily expressed and accessible.
Video blogs, known as “Vlogs” are defined by Wikipedia as “a form of blog for which the medium is video, and is a form of web television… vlog entries often combine embedded video (or a video link) with supporting text, images…”
Any individual with access to the Internet and a webcam or digital camera may create a vlog. The entries are as personalized as its creator chooses to make them. Some focus on news, others on sports and beauty, comedy as well as just daily documentations of their lives.
It was not long after discovering YouTube itself that I got hooked on vlogs created by my favorite YouTubers. Their material is generally extremely authentic as they are the sole creators of their own content. I love the personal connection you may feel with these individuals as their personality is truly allowed to shine through their content.
Within this blog, I would like to highlight my favorite vloggers and hopefully expose the world of this new form of media and communication to an unknowing audience. This world created by YouTube’s easy accessibility is not just fun but extremely entertaining and even educational. I love the fact that individualistic creativity can be accessible on such an international scale.
